Software
Free software, or freeware as it is also known, is available all over the
Internet for a variety of purposes. This list is definately not coprehensive,
for comprehensive freeware coverage please visit one of the Free Software Sites.
Caesar I Rating: 10/10
-
This is an old game that's just now being given away as freeware! It looks like a good game (at least by 1993 standards), and is the basis for the awesome Caesar II and Caesar III games.
Clickpix Cursors Rating: 9/10
- This is one of many free software programs that allows you to replace your cursor with a unique graphic. While there is nothing wrong with this program, I do have to question its functionality. Still, it does look like a cool program.
Dexterity Software Free Game Demos Rating: 9/10
- Here is a website that gives away demos of 14 puzzle and arcade games. The games are of pretty good quality, although they aren't full versions and are full of messages begging you to upgrade for $19.95.
TerraGame.com Rating: 8/10
- This website offers a wide variety of games as free demos for download from their website. The games themselves are not bad at all, but the demo versions do limit the number of times you can play (50) and the levels/features you can access.
- TerraGame.net
A similar website run by the same company, this website features much of the same content and game demos as TerraGame.com.
- Free Games Today
Another similar website to TerraGame.com featuring many of the same free game demos.
NetSolitaire 2003 Rating: 8/10
- In case your computer didn't come with Windows Entertainment Pack or some other good card games already pre-installed, this website offers some interesting card games available for download. There are six forms of solitaire available to be downloaded. The only downside to the program appears to be the fact that there is an advertising banner on screen whenever you play it.
FTP Programs
FTP Works 1.41 910kb - Corban Software - Rating: 8/10
- Are you just looking for a basic FTP program without all of the advanced features that you probably will never use? If you are, I would recommend FTP Works. It has enough featues for all basic uploading/downloading tasks, and there are some bugs fixed in this new version.
Fastream FTP++ 1,350kb - Fastream Technologies - Rating: 7/10
- Another FTP Client and server, this one is ad supported.
Freeway FTP 250kb - Rating: 6/10
- This FTP program is a quick download, and has some special features. I could not gather much information from the program's website, however.
HTML Editors
1st Page 2000 5,200kb - Evrsoft - Rating: 10/10
- The best freeware program out there, 1st Page 2000 is a professional HTML editor with all that you would expect to pay $100 for. Besides the standard HTML tags, 1st Page comes loaded with javascripts, DHTML scripts, HTML reference, a built in web browser and much more!
Arachnophilia
- 1,600kb - Rating: 9/10
This webpage editor has some unique features like a preview window that is updated as you type and is much smaller than 1st Page, so I recommend it to anyone who wants something as useful as 1st Page but not as large.
Create a Site Rating: 8/10
- This amazing piece of freeware helps you make both HTML and CGI scripts! It's a text editor, not WYSIWYG, so it gives you control of what you're making. However, I would be a little worried that it's too advanced for a lot of people.
Web Browsers
Internet Explorer 5.5 Rating: 10/10
- The best web browser around, Internet Explorer 5.5 has a few improvements over 5.0, though there are not many real diffrences. However, you should download 5.5 if you are using 4.0 or a older Netscape.
Smart Customized Web Browsers Rating: 10/10
- Here is the best "browser customization" software I've seen. They offer several different types of browsers for however you use the Internet (news, sports, freebies ect..). It pulls up links based on what website you're looking at from the dmoz.org open directory, and it allows you to choose what your default search engine is. Considering that some software will just send you to advertisers' sites and provide their own pay-per-click search engine, this piece of freeware seems to be a pretty good deal.
UCmore Rating: 9/10
- This browser toolbar pulls up related categories, and websites within those categories, as you visit websites. The main listings that they pull up look to be of good quality (powered by the Open Directory Project), although there is paid adverising in the form of "sponsored links" alongside the actual related sites.
Netscape 6 Rating: 9/10
- If you want a browser with all of the internet features (the web, Instant Messenging, news, e-mail) combined, you should try Netscape 6. While Internet Explorer is better for more advanced users, Netscape 6 is the browser I recommend to people who want to have the Web delivered to them instead of exploring it on their own. Also be aware that there are permanent links to Netscape websites built into the browser.
Britney Spears Browser Toolbar Rating: 7/10
- This browser toolbar (for IE 5.0 and above) has a distinct Britney Spears theme. While Spears' most devoted fans may enjoy this freebie, I'm not sure whether it's particularly useful to the average Internet user. You have to register your name and e-mail address to download the toolbar.
Media Players
WinAmp 917kb - Nullsoft - Rating: 8/10
- A popular download, Winamp is a music player that can handle the popular MPEG Layer 2 and 3 as well as other formats. There are skins available for Winamp and some other good stuff.
Sonique 2,200kb - Team Sonique - Rating: 7/10
- Another music player, this one can play WMA, MPEG, MP2, MP3, WAV, MOD, XM, IT, S3M, and CD audio.
Windows Media Player
- Get the latest version of Windows Media Player, which should come with all versions of Windows here.
Instant Messenging
Odigo
Rating: 10/10
- This program looks like it is the best instant messenging program out there. It can communicate with AIM, Yahoo! and ICQ users, display current lists of popular web sites, have different skins, use different avatars, show content channels and a lot more! Odigo takes the best features of many different programs and combines them into one great freeware.
Yahoo! Messenger 3.5
Rating: 9/10
- A instant messenger program similar to AIM, Yahoo! provides a program that combines instant messenging with a chat client, stocks, news, sports, weather and even travel! This program can even be customized with skins that change the appearance of the program. The "smilies" are also a fun feature of great program that has several million users.
CheetaChat
Rating: 9/10
- As a standard chat room program, CheetaChat is a client for Yahoo! Chat and Ichat sites. It has many special features like text to speech, firewall support, random quotes and more.
AOL Instant Messenger 4.3
Rating: 8/10
This was one of the first instant messenger programs ever made, and was previously available only to America Online members. However, now it is free to everyone and has many special features like "Instant Images", e-mail, stock and buddy alerts and games. AOL Instant Messenger is the worlds's most popular instant messenger program.
MSN Messenger Service
Rating: 8/10
- Not to be outdone by the other big portals, MSN's messenger has all of the standard features, plus a few unique ones like a typing indicator and the ability to transfer files through the messenger interface.
Imici Messenger
Rating: 7/10
- If you are looking for a good instant messenger program without all of the extra features, Imici may be for you. The best feature of Imici is that it lets you chat across four different IM systems: AIM, MSN, Yahoo! and ICQ.
ICQ
Rating: 7/10
- ICQ is similar to other instant messenger programs, except that ICQ users have numbers instead of nicknames and the software is designed to help users find random chat partners, instead of people that you know. Another issue with ICQ is the amount of unsolicited commercial messages that you get, even when you don't give away your number to anyone.
Other Free Software
123 FREE Solitaire Rating: 10/10
-
An award winning small piece of freeware, 123 FREE Solitaire looks like a very nice collection of card games for you to play. These games include Carpet, FreeCell, Klondike, and a bunch of games I've never heard of, but they look fun. The download is 1.4 MB.
Sausage Reptile 2.0
2,223kb - Sausage Software - Rating: 10/10
-
Besides 1stPage, this is the coolest freeware I have seen. It is a professional graphics tool that you can use to make backgrounds for websites or whatever else you want. I have made some incredible backgrounds using this, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Web Chrono Desktop Rating: 9/10
- If you are the sort of person who uses the little "accessories" programs in Windows you might appreciate this program. It includes 7 programs with a variety of functions, ranging from improving the Windows clipboard to converting between measurement systems. The one issue with the program is that you have to download all the components at once, even if you don't need them all.
Eclipse v.3 Personal Edition Screen Saver Utility Rating: 8/10
- If you like to make screen savers from your own photos (and don't have Windows XP or some other program that lets you use them), you should look at this. It looks like a quite useful program, with many transitions that you can use to create a slideshow with your own pictures, sounds and movies. The free version is only for personal use, though.
Go!Zilla Rating: 5/10
- I would recommend Go!Zilla, a file downloading utility to anyone who has trouble with typical browser downloads. The most useful feature of Go!Zilla is the ability to recover lost downloads. Advertising included.
CalcuWage Rating: 4/10
- This is a fine little piece of software. The problem is that it really doesn't do anything useful. If you really wanted to know what your earnings were, you'd probably have more fun making the calculations on your calculator. It's not a game and it doesn't do anything useful, hense the low rating.
